ASLAN
Innovating Urban Mobility with Advanced Satellite-Connected Positioning for Very Light Railway Systems
The Automated Survey, Localisation and Navigation (ASLAN) project, supported by the UK Space Agency Unlocking Space For Business programme, is developing a cutting-edge On Board Unit (OBU) for transport and logistics applications. Focusing initially on the rail industry, ASLAN is being configured for a Very Light Railway (VLR), showcasing its potential in urban tram systems. This innovative technology harnesses satellite connectivity and advanced position, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies to transform urban mobility.
At its core, ASLAN features a modular design that adapts to diverse needs. The system integrates a sophisticated positioning module with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU/INS). Additional modules handle control, data collection, processing, and connectivity. With plug-and-play interfaces, ASLAN allows for easy testing and optimization of various instrument combinations, capturing comprehensive data across all phases of tram operation.
ASLAN aims to achieve unprecedented levels of accuracy, precision, continuity, and availability in terrestrial transport systems. This breakthrough offers numerous advantages, including reduced reliance on vulnerable fixed infrastructure, enhanced operational efficiencies, and improved safety-of-life operations. As we push the boundaries of transport technology, ASLAN paves the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient urban mobility solutions, shaping the future of transportation one innovation at a time.
